Tips On Burglar Alarm Installation

Burglar alarms have evolved into very complex pieces of equipment. Of course, the complexity is a direct function of what is supposed to be protected. Businesses usually require more complex burglar alarms than residences. Many home burglar alarms are unmonitored systems that merely alert the owner of an intrusion and frighten away a would be burglar. Most business alarm systems and some home systems are monitored affairs linked directly to emergency services or to a monitoring station that can alert emergency responders as needed.

Most burglar alarms are professionally installed today. Many people choose to use professionals for installation because the job will be completed with a much neater appearance than a do it yourself installation. Professionals will also guarantee the quality of the installation. However, it is possible to install your own system by following a few simple steps.

The first step in installing your own burglar alarm is determining how complex the system needs to be. Do you want just a burglar alarm, or a complete system including fire alarm and medical services? The more complex systems will require different types of sensors and will make the installation more difficult for the do it yourselfer.

Next, you should determine how many sensors of each type are needed. Count the access points to you house, including doors, windows, and emergency exits. You will need a sensor for each access. Also, count the total number of rooms in the house to determine the number of smoke or heat sensors needed for a fire alarm.

Once you have the sensors, you can install them at the doors and windows according to the instructions. Check the spacing between parts of access sensors to be certain they are not so far apart as to not pick up when a door or window is opened, and not so close as to interfere with the normal opening or closing of same. Install fire alarm sensors according to their own set of instructions. Route all the wires to the location you have selected for the installation of the control panel.

Install the signal device, usually a loud bell or siren, in a strategic location. Outside is preferred, as the mere presence of the device may deter burglars. It is essential though, to make sure the signal device is shielded from the elements to ensure it will operate properly when needed. It is also important that you be able to hear the alarm signal when it sounds no matter where in the building you are.

Finally, you will want to mount the control panel near one of the main doors used for entrance and exit. This will allow you to set the alarm when leaving and reset it on returning within a limited amount of time preprogrammed into the system.

Connect all the wires from the various sensors, making sure to attach the wires to the correct portion of the control board for the type of sensor involved. You really don't want the fire department called to your home for a fire when the problem is an intruder. After the installation in complete, it is important to test each component. Open and close each door, and window. If a sensor fails to register, make any needed adjustments until it works properly.

Burglar alarms can be frighteningly complex systems. Many choose to have one professionally installed when they get one. However, a do it yourselfer can install even a complex system by following a few simple steps.
